Wanted to confirm, whether an individual and his dependants can continue to stay in Canada, if the individual's WP has expired but awaiting decision on PR on an inland application.

No, you need to extend your status as a visitor is your work permit has expired less than 90 days previously.

I might find mysellf in the same situation after December 2012.
So you can stay on an expired W|P for 90 days?
Should I apply for visitor visa if I hold a valid passport from a visa-exempt country?

You can stay in canda for 6 months more and you can extend it again

I also have a passport from a country which is not a visa exempt country..Actually this is my main passport on which I came here in Canada...I got my other citizenship while staying in Canada.
Should I apply for a visitor visa with my "original" passport?or simply stay here for additonal 6 months?Do have to report to someone or just simply stay here for6 months?I do ot have to leave the country first?

You can never work on a visitor visa....as per my knowledge...

No, not quite. You have to apply for restoration and pay the additional fee within 90 days of the expiry of your status. Note, if CBSA comes across you and you don't have status (even if 90 days haven't passed) then they will report you and could issue a removal order. It is always best to keep your status valid.
