Hello!

I've been accepted into a college and will hopefully be going to Canada to start my course January 2014 (Provided my Visa goes through). I've read that once you graduate, you may be eligible to to apply for a work permit for between one and three years. Does anybody know if this is the case, and if so, how likely is it that my request will be granted?

Also, am I entitled to stay in Canada while my application for the post-graduation work permit is being processed?

Thanks so much in advance!

1. Yes, depending on the school you attend. The list is here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/participants.asp
2. Yes.

Thanks for your help! Do you know the likelihood of that post-graduation work permit being approved? If we do everything right, is it pretty much guaranteed, or do very few people get accepted?

If you study at a college that is on the list and you graduate your program, you will qualify and you will be approved automatically if you apply.

Another thing to consider is keeping good grades and applying for an off campus work permit after 6 months of studies. You can use it to work up to 20 hrs. a week during the semester or full time during holidays. After you graduate, you may use the off campus permit to bridge the period that you are waiting for your post-grad permit and can work full time.

Note: It appears that in January/2014 that student permit holders (approved schools only) will be issued off-campus work permits at the same time as their study permit. No longer 6 months wait. Though at the same time you must keep up your marks and be making progress in your studies or the study permit will be cancelled.
