Hi All,

I and my family are Canadian PRs. I have 8 more months to meet my canadian citizenship eligibility. Due to unforeseen circumstances, my company have closed their canadian branch and asked me to relocate. They are doing my L1B visa and i am expected to move to US in next 2 months.

I am thinking of going to US for couple of weeks and then taking a sabbatical leave (unpaid off) for six months and come back to Canada to meet my citizenship eligibility. so, my questions are:

1. Canadian citizenship - will it be okay to put US company in job employment for last 6 months in my citizenship application? will this cause any issues?
2. US immigration - if i go to US after 6 months, will there be lot of questions on why i was away from US for 6 months? If so, can i say i went to meet my citizenship eligibility? will this reason create any issues.

Thanks

1. Not a problem. You will need to declare that US income and pay taxes in Canada until you've irrevocably left (suggest you speak with a professional about those two bits, filing taxes in US and Canada can be tricky, and when you do 'leave' you need to tie up loose ends as well).

Don't see why you wouldn't ask the US company to let you work remotely at least some of the time with periodic trips there. Or if they have an office near border, commute some. Seems more sustainable to have you working on and off (some time in USA, some in Canada). I know someone who is spending three days a week working in USA, with judicious travel decisions, it means only one day a week lost for residency in Canada, and occasional weeks of no travel (holidays etc) means less.

But that's your affair.

2. No idea, ask the Americans.

If they're smart about when they travel, they only lose one day a week for residency in Canada, and weeks when they don't travel (for example, holidays) mean even less.
Amazing, now we have spambots copying other posts, modifying the text (using AI I guess) including those just above, and inserting spam links.
