Hello,

I am currently on student visa in Montreal. If I marry a Permanent Resident of Canada, what will be my status afterwards?
Will I still be eligible for the 3 years of Work Permit after my studies?

Thanks in advance.

it sounds like you are talking about multiple types of PR applications and your question is confusing. How specifically are you planning to apply for PR? Are you applying for spousal pr, meaning you are married to a canadian citizen/PR and they are sponsoring you? or are you applying as a dependent on someone else's PR application through another immigration stream?

if that's the case, then you wouldn't be classified as a dependent. A dependant for spousal sponsorship purposes generally means children of one of the spouses. If you are applying for spousal sponsorship, then you are the "principal applicant".

The new spousal sponsorship application package comes out tomorrow, and it suggests that any applicant IN Canada as a worker, student or visitor will now be eligible for the spousal owp. It is unknown if there are other requirements yet to be disclosed, so if you apply for PR with the new package, it is encouraged to send an application for the spousal owp with it, and hope they approve it.

Hello Everyone,

Without confusing anyone, I would like to ask the following:

1] I am on a study permit and studying M.Eng at a university in Montreal. I have 3 years of work experience in IT from India. I am also working part time currently. My fiance is a Permanent Resident of Canada and he is working full time in IT. My question is:

- If we get married after my post-graduation, will I lose my work permit status and will I be considered a dependent instead ??

2] Will I be able to sponsor my Parents for the visitor Visa if I am considered a dependent or will my Husband be able to do the same for my parents?

Thanks in advance.

1. As I already stated in the very first response, marrying a PR does NOTHING to your status.

2. You don't sponsor people for TRVs. You can send them a Letter of Invitation and they can use that when applying for a TRV.

Just to add that marrying your PR fiance does not make you a dependent, children are technically referred to as dependents not spouses. Once married or once graduated your PR spouse will either have to sponsor you for PR or once graduated if PR application not being pursued you will need to apply for a PGWP. However as per post before this marrying a PR does not change your current study permit status just the options to obtain PR post marriage.
