Starting new working holiday visa

Hello,

I'm looking to seek clarification around starting a new working holiday visa.

I am currently in Canada on my first working holiday visa under IEC program and I have my letter of acceptance for another 2 years. My current visa expires November 2016 and I want to know if it's ok to start my new visa months earlier than this expiry. I understand this will shorten the expiry of my next visa.

I think it will be ok, but I just want to be certain before I do a flag pole at the border!

Any feedback would be much appreciated,

L

Yes it is absolutely OK.

Rule of thumb at the border is doing the flagpole couple of days before expiration of your existing permit. Once I tried to do it for my visitor permit almost a month early and the officer told me to go back, use the time and then come back a day or two before expiration date.

If you don't mind asking why would you want to do that? Just out of curiosity! The officers will ask you the same question as well.

Best of luck,

Thanks for the reply! Good to know it should be ok. I expected that they will at least ask why I am ending my current visa early.

A few reasons - I can't get a new visa for my partner until I renew mine. His visa can be issued under mine and to the same new expiry date. Due to going home for a holiday shortly before our visa expires and our work needing reassurance that we will have ongoing visas when we return, I want to get everything sorted well in advance. At least 2 months before the expiry date.

Thanks,

L

Hopefully you have planned to cover the usual stuff for a new IEC, proof funds and 2 years insurance given do not expect the fact you are on an IEC currently changes those initial requirements to get the full 2 years but may depend on the CBSA officer you get. They are in my view more interested in repatriation to home country should the worst happen being included in any insurance than the actual health part.
