Hello

So I am in a bit of a sticky situation. I am currently waiting for my status to be restored, the application for my status to be restored was sent back in January and it has been almost three months. At the time I had not receievd a letter of admission from the university for my masters degree. I gained admission for September start date but I have to begin a prerequisite program that is three months long in duration, I know normally you don't need a study permit for such short program but because my status has not been restored I am not sure if I am able to start this program.

Any one have any ideas? It would really help me because the program starts in May. Running out of time. :(

You cannot start the program while waiting for restoration. Yes - if a program is six months or less in duration, you can study without a study permit. However in order to do that, you need to have valid visitor status in Canada. You'll need to wait until your status is restored before you do anything. If you start studying before your status is restored, you'll be studying illegally and that will put the rest of your plans for Canada in jeopardy.

If you don't think your status is going to be restored in time, consider leaving Canada now and re-entering close to the start of your program in May.

If I leave Canada won't that affect my restoration of status application? I don't want to leave and then not be able to come back in.

Am I still able to send in a study permit just to see if perhaps that may work?

If you leave Canada this cancels your restoration application and you'll be entering Canada as a new visitor when you re-enter. So technically there is no guarantee you will be allowed back into the country. You'll also need a valid TRV to re-enter Canada if you are non-visa exempt.

I don't understand what you mean by sending in a study permit. Do you mean from inside Canada or outside of Canada?

from inside canada. Oh i meant sending a study permit application, sorry about that.

I mean the worst case scenario is I would have to defer my program start date to January and then take the pre requisite program in September and by September, I would hopefully be able to have heard back from CIC about the restoration. They say 4-5 months so I am thinking maybe sometime next month.
