I was just wondering if one could start work before getting their PR card. Can we get the SIN number by just showing our passports in which PR visa is pasted and the copy of COPR letter.
Whilst Service Canada officially tell you that you need your PR card to get your SIN card if you were an inland applicant, if you go down there with the form completed, ( http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/cgi-bin/search/eforms/index.cgi?app=prfl&frm=nas2120&ln=eng ) and your Confirmation of Permanent Residence AND visa counterfoil affixed to a your passport they should issue you one. Both my son and I got ours within days of landing without our PR cards and I was an inland applicant, my son outland.
the SIN card is the one which arrives the fastest; we applied for it with the Confirmation of Landing paper (or maybe now it's called different) and we got it in less than 1 month after we arrived, before the PR card
