I came to canada as student and i have SIN number but it was expired on march 2014.
Right now my application is under spouse sponsorship. I got married oct 2017.

My spouse want to file tax for 2017. If she change her marital status. Can I provide my name and my SIN number that is expired?? Will i get trouble by CBSA?? will CRA will tell CBSA??

Your spouse married in 2017 and i 'think her status with CRA should change to Married.

Your spousal sponsorship is currently been processed, when did you apply ?

Is your spousal sponsorship INLAND or OUTLAND ?

What's you current immigration Status ?

Really don't think you should provide an expired SIN, .....maybe others could also advice you here....

Your spouse has to change her status to married when she files her income tax return. She doesn't need to provide a SIN for you if you don't have one. She will need to verify that her spouse is a foreigner who doesn't yet have residency in Canada.

What happens if spouse is entitled to GST benefits?

I was married to my American husband for three years before he became a resident last June. I still received GST as usual. You have to declare any earnings your foreign spouse made during the tax year whether they are in Canada or not. Neither of us earns all that much, so I didn't really see any change in what I get.

Thanks! And I am included on the GST credits too? Even though I'm a non-resident yet?
So both spouse gst credit + non-resident gst credit will get credit to my spouse?

I was informed by the CRA that my GST would not reflect my married status until my spouse was a legal resident of Canada and had a SIN, but I read in another thread here that this was not the case for others with foreign spouses. So it's hard to say. I am really curious to see if my GST changes this year now that my husband is a resident and has filed his first Canadian tax return.

Thanks for that information. I got confused on what will happen to the gst calculation. But I guess we have to put some explanation that I’m still a non resident when my spouse submits her first gst application form.

Does your husband have PR yet? My husband came in March 2017 from the US we filed his paperwork and received an open work permit and has a sin. Does he file taxes here?

My husband is a permanent resident, has been for almost a year. He filed his first Canadian tax return in February.

It's not clear as to which of the above posters you are questioning. But, it seems that the one you are addressing has not been on the forum since 2018, so not likely you'll see a response.
