Hi all,

I am a Canadian citizen.

My wife is pregnant when we submitted her application for permanent resident Nov 2013 and she gave birth last month in the Philippines.

I have some concerns which I would like someone to suggest, please.

Do i still have submit an application for my baby to be added as dependent in my wife's application or apply directly for the citizenship of my baby.

I really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks.

The answer is... it depends! and you might need to do both....

Are you a Canadian citizen because you were born in Canada or naturalized ? or did you get your Canadian citizenship because your parents were Canadian, but you are not born in Canada? based on that, your baby might already be Canadian. see here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules/index.asp and use the "am i a Canadian citizen" tool (by answering on behlaf of your baby) to see if he/she is Canadian already or not.

If the baby is Canadian: apply for his certificate of Citizenship. It can take a while, so ask for an "urgent processing" based on the fact that you have applied for PR for your wife. See here for urgent processing http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/urgent-proof.asp
You will still have to inform the VO about the baby, but he/she doesn't need to be added to the main application ( to get PR at the same time), just in the form "Family composition" - complete a new form, and send it to your VO together with a copy of birth certificate, and ID (from the Philippines) - and explain that you have applied for Certificate of Citizenship.

If your baby is NOT Canadian (based on the information from CIC), then, you need to re-do the form for the "main applicant" and add the baby as a dependent, as well as the forms for Family composition, so that the baby gets a PR at the same time as the mother.

Good luck, and congratulations!

First of all, congratulations on your new baby.

You will need to provide an update as soon as possible to add your baby to the application.

Based on what you find from Sweden's advice, you need to do some other things if the baby is not a Canadian citizen. You will have to pay a fee for the baby as "a family member of the principal applicant who is less than 22 years of age and is not a spouse or common-law partner" which is $150. I'm fairly certain that the baby will also need a medical exam. Even if your wife had children that she was not bringing to Canada they would have to be included in her application and they would have to have medicals done, so the baby must be added to your wife's applications.

Thanks for your response.

My mother and i became Naturalized Canadian year 2011.

Based on " Am i Canadian citizen?" tool, my baby is likely a Canadian citizen.

Do i have to submit the proof citizenship of my baby in Manila or i can submit it directly here in Canada?

They will need the information in Manila, because that is where your application is being processed. I think you need to send it directly to Manila.
