I have been following the issue of the Open work permit (OWP) as it relates to an inland spousal sponsorship. I will be the applicant, a UK citizen, currently residing in the UK. My fiancee, the sponsor, is a canadian citizen currently residing in BC. We intend to live together in Ontario, get married and apply inland.
Please correct me if i do not have the right information, it has been gathered from the CIC website and information gathered from this forum,
1) the pilot scheme to issue the OWP to the applicant was introduced by the previous canadian government in december 2014 and was extended for one more year in december 2015.
2) the current waiting time for the OWP to be issued from the initial spousal visa application, is around 4-5 months. this time is based on reports in other threads in this forum.
3) the OWP should be applied for along with the spousal visa application.
4) the OWP is issued when the sponsors part of the application is accepted.
5) the extension of the pilot scheme was 1 year and will be reviewed in december 2016.
Now, my concern is that with a change of government the pilot scheme will not be extended and OWP will not be issued until the application process is complete. I have been following this issue online for some time and i am not seeing any new information or any commitment to extending it or replacing it with something else. I am given hope by the current liberal government's commitment to reducing processing times and making it easier for families to be together and support themselves during the application process.
