Wow, there are so many great posts here, which is a little overwhelming. I am hoping if I state my situation I may be able to get help from someone.

My boyfriend and I started seeing each other in 2008, he lives in Estevan, SK and I live in California. We visited each other a few times and decided I would move to Canada to be with him. I tried for the Skilled Worker / Professional Immigration
, and even had a company where he lives that was willing to sponser me, however they got turned down. With no other luck, we decided that perhaps it wasn't in the cards for us, since neither one of us were looking to get married at the time and went our separate ways. We both realize now how much we truly love each other and wish to get married and are trying to figure out the best way to go about this. I've read tons of posts on many websites but as I said above I'm a little overwhelmed.

Here are my questions:
1) Is is better for us to get married in the US or Canada for the Spousal sponsership? I've read "You can sponsor the person as your spouse if your marriage is a legally valid civil marriage. If your spouse is of the opposite sex and your marriage took place outside Canada, the marriage must be valid both under the laws of the jurisdiction where it took place and under Canadian law". Does this mean we can get married here in California, and use that marriage certificate when he applies for Spousal Sponsership?

2) I know I can get a temporary visa to visit Canada, with hope of extending that Visa, yet it doesn't look like I would be able to work while staying with him. The concern is leaving my well paying job now, and not having the ability to work. Although he has a fantasic job, his own home, etc, I wish to work too and would love to work in Canada. Is there a way of possibly getting a work permit of sorts while I am "visiting" there waiting for the Spousal sponsership to go through?

3) Would it be better if I moved closer to where he lives in Canada, but on the US side, like in North Dakota, so we can be closer together and prove we are seeing each other more frequently?

We both wish to go the quickest route we can to be together, but understand patience is what is going to bind us together for life. Any assistance you can render will be greaty appreciated!!

Wishing I Were in Canada...

1) You can get married in either. Your marriage in the US will be legal in Canada.

2) Visitors cannot work without a permit. You have to find a willing employer who can get a positive LMO. Otherwise you have to wait until PR is granted before being able to work without a permit. An Outland application for a US applicant can be approved in as little as 4 months (my US Feb 2011 batchmates are receiving PR now, also some from March 2011), so it is more advantageous to apply Outland in your case, rather than go and stay with him and apply Inland and wait for an Open Work Permit, which can take as much as 10 months.

3) If that would work for the two of you, you may want to look into that. However, having known each other for a while, provided you can show the development of the relationship via pictures, emails, passport stamps etc, there is no reason you can't start building a strong application package now, and be ready to apply soon after you are married.

Thank you CharlieD10! You have been most helpful! So in order for me to get a Temporary Work Permit, I have to find an employer who has a valid LMO. I can't get a TWP and a Temporary Visa and look for a job while there? Please advise.

You can apply for a work permit, but depending on your skills, it could be a long wait to find something suitable that you can be hired for.

Anyone, help!

Need your advice badly. I forgot to pay RPRF! I just recently passed our application to CPC-M just a week ago. Please Help! Should I send the RPRF Payment now and how? Or should I wait for CPC-M to request for it. I dont want any delays.

Thanks!

I would suggest you wait untill you get an AOR from the VO when your file is tranferred out. That way youll have your file number, and they can just add the payment to your records. If you try sending it now it could be lost as you havent even received a sponsor approval with client ID

Hi All,

Please advice me on the following:

At the time when my husband applied for my PR he was in Toronto but while my application is in process, he plans to move to Montreal.

What would be the implications of this move on my sponsorship?

Thanks a lot!

You would need to apply for a CSQ from Quebec immigration.

Hello

I have a question, I hope someone can be able to help me. My husband is sponsoring me, he is in Canada and I am in Cape Town. Will it affect my correspondence, with my VO if they start sending me letters or anything, if i decide to move from where I am staying right now to somewhere else, (but still living in cape town) that will mean I change my postal address.. I would not want to delay my application process or result in mail being lost. But they do send everything on email as well hey...

No worrying or freaking out necessary. As long as the police certificate is less than 3 months old by the time it is received at CPC-M (not the day they process it), it is held valid for a year from the date it was issued.
