Did you sponsor your divorced husband OR were not sponsored by him? If so, WHEN?Hi all. I am new to this thread. Need some advice, please.
I am a Canadian citizen and I have sponsored my parents to come to Canada in the past. They only lived here for less than a year and went back home. They do not wish to ever come back to Canada. This all happened after I divorced an abusive husband who my parents preferred over me. This husband was a co-signer in the sponsorship. Fast forward, I have now moved on and met someone who is not yet a permanent resident. I wish to marry and sponsor him, but I don't know if I would qualify because of having sponsored my parents. He also has a 3 yo son who does not live with him. My questions are:
- having sponsored my parents, I know I am liable for them for 20 years from the start of sponsorship (and so is my ex-husband). Would this disqualify me from doing a spousal sponsorship? How much do I have to make to be able to sponsor my future husband? (I have one child who lives with me).
- do I have to include my future spouse's child in the process?
- can a parent sponsorship ever be cancelled in case of abuse from parents towards sponsor?
Thanks so much everyone and happy new year!
If not, Yes you are eligible( qualified) to sponsor your future spouse as long as you meet other sponsorship requirements related to your case.

In your case, financial requirement is the key. Since you will be sponsoring your future husband with his minor child who is his dependent. Probably you won't have to prove your financial ability.
Income requirement
In most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse or partner or dependent child. You only need to show that you have enough money to meet the income requirements if:
- you’re sponsoring a dependent child that has 1 or more dependent children of their own, or
- you’re sponsoring a spouse or partner that has a dependent child, and their dependent child has 1 or more children of their own.

NB: If you did not sponsor your EX husband OR were not sponsored by him, you don't need to worry; but like you, he will always be responsible for your parents since he co-signed for their PR.
