Hi everyone,

I am a newbie here and so glad that I came across this site! My husband (the sponsor) and I are researching to see how I can get a PR status and below are a brief background about us and a list of my questions:

My husband is a Canadian citizen and has been working in the US since 2010 under TN visa. I came to the US from Mainland China to study as an international student and is now holding a TD visa as his spouse. We are wondering:
1. to apply for a Permanent Resident status, what materials we need to prepare
2. what the requirements are for my husband as a sponsor
3. what would be the quickest way to obtain a Permanent Resident status, if the application is approved at the first try. I saw that the average processing time in China offices (Hong Kong and Beijing) is 9 months, compared to 23 months in New York office. Can I deliver my application materials while I am physically in the US?
4. any other thing we need to be aware of

Thank you very much and I look forward to your reply!
It says 23 months but the average time especially for an uncomplicated application through the US is actually much faster. If you look on the US thread many people take 5 mo. How long will your status remain valid in the US? Or do you plan to move to Canada earlier?
The thing to do really for now is to refer to page 1 of this thread

You said your wife got sponsorship approval. That IS the first stage. I assume she got a letter saying she was approved as a sponsor as you say you got SA and this is the first stage so you got it already
Thanks for your reply. I'm a little bit confused. My wife did get approved as a sponsor but I have not received the formal approval letter or email? What is 'SA'? Can I apply for a work permit with the letter my wife got?

As she is the one applying for approval thatemail goes to her not you. SA is ssponsorship approval. They must have sent her an email or how would she know? I don't know about work permits. I know before Jan 15 I think, you were suppose to put in an open work permit with the application or something and now you can't. I don't know anything about applying for OWP after stage one outland approval. I would stop working until you get it sorted out. Does anyone else know?

What special circumstances in your application thinks it will require special processing? New York and LA handle "complex/difficult" applications usually which means that time applies to cases with criminality issues, relationship concerns, ARC requirements, etc. If you think there is something about your application that is likely to require special processing, it will take longer with Hong Kong or Beijing as well.

Your application is sent (sponsor part + applicant part) to CPC-M. You can send it to them from anywhere in the world.

Let me explain,
I'm inland and I am the applicant, my wife was approved to sponsor me, but I still didn't get the Initial Acceptance Letter that allows me to apply for a work permit and health care. Its been a month since my wife was accepted as a sponsor and i've completed med exam that was recieved. I'm wondering if they email it to or if it got lost in the mail or if it just takes a while?

It should be sent at the same time as the letter to the sponsor. It is possible the e-mail did not reach you. Have you contacted the CIC call centre?

Thank you Computergeek, thats what I have been worried about, it seemed odd because I did receive the request for the medical exam the same day. I will call them first thing Monday, apperently systems are down tomorrow. Thanks for all the help though

No I understand that. I am also the sponsor, like your wife. My husband never got an email because I am the one in the first stage asking to be approved as a sponsor. So I got the first email. In the first stage she is being approved, not you. Now in stage 2 it's your turn to be assessed. All future correspondence will go to you now, but you will not be receiving that email because in a sense you already did, or rather your wife did, as she is the sponsor and SHE was applying for sponsorship approval. I hope you understand what I'm saying now. You are applying for PR, your application has only just started. Fir them to even look at your application they have to agree that she can sponsor you. It's between the CIC and her not you in stage 1. That's why you personally, did not get an email. They haven't approved you personally for anything yet other than agreeing to take your application. The first two emails, SA and the one saying our application has been received in Singapore (our processing office) went to me. The request for remedical, police clearance and updated schedule 1/A along with PPR, went to my husband as the applicant.

Is it not true that they do both? I think she is just asking where's the better place to run her application through because she's been in the US since 2010 but I'm guessing she looked up processing time and saw it listedat 23 mo or whatever it is. LA says the same but if you look at the timelines most are very fast. I don't think she has any special circumstance or criminal issue it's just what it says on the website is intimidating. That's my guess.

In telling you my husband never got that email. And I get that as I was the one applying to be approved. I don't understand the problem anyway. He is in Canada presumably with his wife, if it's the letter he needs to apply for a work permit with can he not just use the letter that was sent to her?

I have a question. We are going to send our application for family sponsorship. I want to became sponsor for my husband. What we must do if we want my husband get his pr and work permit together at the same time?we must send the applications for family sponsorship and the applications for work permit in the same envelope? How we ask the immigration that when my husband became pr we want him to get his work permit?
which are the applications for open work permit for those who apply for family sponsorship outland?

You don't need a work permit after the applicant has become a permanent resident. You can apply for it to be granted after first stage processing is complete.

Some members have said that you can get a SIN number at the airport as soon as you land but I don't know if it's available at airports/border entries. Otherwise you can drop into a Service Canada office as soon as you're able to get a SIN to work. No applications necessary to CIC if you are getting it then.
