This question may sound silly but I want to ensure my application is processed fast.

In IMM0008 question 2 it asks if we have ever used a nickname or alias.

Do they mean have we ever used a nickname or alias for official government or visa related forms or do they mean socially with friends and family.

The reason for which I think this detail is important is that if what they mean is :
1. have we submited any official government or visa related forms with our nickname, they may delay the process searching to cross reference with applications under the nickname that do not exist or belong to someone else because we have only used our names as in the passport
But if they mean have we used nicknames or aliases socially with friends we need to declare because we have some emails calling each other nicknames (english made up name like steve or sophia instead of real chinese name) we do not want them to delay questioning our emails or communications because we did not declare the nickname.

Please anyone help?

Thx.

The nickname part is strictly from a legal standpoint, as far as I know. Meaning, any documents you have the have your nickname or anything like that. I don't think nicknames/petnames are going to count. If your emails and correspondence between one another use a nickname, then write an explanation why you use them and include it with your application. For example, your birth name doesn't translate well into English/French, therefore your spouse started calling you SallyMae because of a joke you two once had. Now he calls you that all the time because of the language barrier. Something simple and straightforward. But you don't need to include that on the form because it's not a legal name you use, only something for close family/friends.

Good luck

Very soon.
I asked CIC about this and was told that they want to know any nicknames or alias we've used anywhere. I asked if this included aliases I've used on social media, like Twitter, and he repeated that they want to know any nicknames used anywhere. Since he didn't explain any further I included my Twitter and other nicknames/aliases. In my country it is illegal to use a nickname or alias on any legal documents so I presumed that CIC check on nicknames and aliases as part of the background security checks.

If you have regularly used a nickname/alias anywhere I'd tell them. I don't think they are interested in pet names & terms of endearment. I can't see any point in telling them that my spouse calls me "babe" or "honeybunch" LOL :D

Hi.
Thanks for reply. I will include the "english" name we gave each other then as most emails and people refer to us that way since our native language names were hard for some to pronounce.

Yes, if you have an English name that you actually use, include it. They definitely do not mean only officially used names or aliases. However, you do not have to include things like 'Baby' or 'Dear'.

Hi,
So my husband have a very long name, and everyone in his family call him with a shorter nickname.
Also, in the conversations that I am attaching with my application, we call each other with same nicknames, used by our families.
But! there is no legal documentation that we have from our country regarding these names.
Should I still mention nicknames in my application, or is that ok just skip.

Need help!
Regards.

Include the nicknames. You don't need legal documentation.
