cheap usually isn't reliable
I have used bank transfers in the past & that works fine.

Do money changers generally give better rates than the banks (and its commission free)?

My bank is charging $40 for up to $10 000.
Then some intermediate bank or financial institution that has connection with Soneri bank in Pakistan is taking another $20 commission.
The rate Soneri bank is giving is ok.

$40 for up to 10,000 is actually pretty good I know banks that charge you way more than that for up to 10,000...and if anything goes wrong (not that it will because bank transfers are pretty secure) the bank can give you recourse(their money is insured). Just saying it's better to go with the bank (I used to work for the bank-6 yrs!)
I think for that sum of money it's a better route!
