Folks, I am a PR currently residing outside of Canada; however, It is my intention to return to Canada shortly. I am planning on bringing my other half with me. My question is, can we come to Canada, get married in Canada, and leave Canada after getting married to sort out other business back home? Will the application be processed as an inland application, or would the application be thrown out due to the fact that we have left the country?

Also, can anyone say what is the approximate time to obtain a work permit when we get married and documents have been filed inland (in Canada)?

Finally, if I have to do it out of Canada, can someone say what the processing time is in the Port of Spain office in Trinidad? I know what the website says in terms of processing times, but generally is this what is being experienced?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

If you apply inland, then BOTH of you need to remain in Canada during the entire processing time. Current times are around 11 months for stage 1 approval and getting OWP, and another 8 months till PR is completed.

If you apply outland, then as a PR sponsor YOU must remain in Canada during the processing. Your spouse can live elsewhere, and come and go to Canada as a visitor during the process (will need TRV if required). You would only be allowed to leave Canada for short trips. There is no OWP associated with outland apps, so your spouse would need to wait until full PR is approved, or could apply for some other kind of work permit.

There is no option to you whatsoever, that would allow you to do the application while you (sponsor) lives outside of Canada.
