Hello All,

I'm British, living in Northern Ireland and my wife is Canadian (born in Canada). We are planning to start the process of applying for Family class sponsorship towards the end of this year. We are also expecting our first child in a couple of months.
My understanding is the our baby will have dual citizenship - British and Canadian.

As the baby will be a Canadian citizen, do we need to include it on our application as a dependant child?
I'm assuming we will need to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship for the baby and then get it a Canadian passport.

Thanks

You need to apply for his/her citizenship certificate seperate from your application. We had the same issue. Unfortunately the application takes 12-15 months which can be longer than the actual PR application. We got a call from CIC in London when we sent in our daughters as they lost her photos so we got a chance to speak to someone and she advised that if my PR gets approved prior to the certificate they can process a temporary passport for her but we would have to do that closer to the time!

We included her as a dependant in my application only because we didnt have her certificate however, they send you a letter confirming her application for citizenship so I included a copy of that in my PR application along with a covering note stating that I had included her as a dependant because she didnt have her citizenship certificate.

Hopefully this helps a little!

While the baby will have canadian citizenship, you still need to list the newborn in the family form 5406 under section B and form sponsorship evaluation form 5481 under 6 B.

I believe this is the exact answer that I was looking for, I just created a new post about it which I will now delete.
Thank you Screech

Do I need to include a copy of the baby's birth certificate or something?

The guide for western Europe IMM3901 states that birth certificates are required to prove the relationship between the sponsor and each of the family members. If your child already has a Canadian citizenship certificate you can include that instead.

This is referring only to family members that are being sponsored. There is no need to prove a relationship with a child not included in the application.

Is this in case the baby still hasn't received its Canadian Cert. or in either case??

Yes. You would be advise to show proof of applying for Canadian citizenship certificate. Plus by providing copies of birth certificate of canadian parent or copy of PR canadian certificate (naturalized canadian) and child birth certificate together to show CIC that the child is Canadian by descent.

I sent mine way back in March and I was so confused on what to do, but my son is due by induction on the 13th of August. My question is, now that my file has hit Ottawa, what do I do? Can I email them? We mentioned it in a note if I remember correctly ( sorry it's been a while) because we were unsure of where to list it or even if we had to as he'll have dual citizenship. I really, really don't want to start over at this point. We are doing our application for Quebec as well.

you won't have to start over. once the baby is born (not before), you will need to notify Ottawa in the change to your family by supplying a new additional family form and i think a birth certificate.
