Spousal Sponsorship Application Cancellation (Emotional Difficulties)

Hello CanadaVisa Forum,

I'm a Canadian Citizen sponsoring my partner and I'm in a very challenging and unfortunate situation and I really require some advice.

Basically, my partner and I are having a serious marital breakdown leading to me needing to cancel my application for Spousal Sponsorship on my partners request.

I am wondering up until what point in the PR Application I have the opportunity to cancel. I do not want to have sponsorship of my partner if we are no longer together, but I am also hesitating to cancel it immediately because of the emotional difficulty of the situation.

The application has not started processing yet, and I am wondering if I should cancel before it does? I do not care about the application money, I am just wondering on how long I may have until I really should cancel the application?

Please give me any advice which you think may be helpful, I would greatly appreciate your support during this difficult time.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties you're facing. You can cancel the application anytime before the person you sponsored obtains PR status (so even after a decision has been made, it's possible to cancel it).

For an outland application that's normally when they actually land in Canada after a decision has been made. For an inland application I guess it would be before they get the portal invitation.

Since you've just submitted your application, you probably have several months before this "deadline" comes.

If your partner is actually requesting that you cancel the sponsorship application I would send in a webform indicating that you would like to cancel sponsorship. Most spouses who are being sponsored try very hard not to have their sponsorship application withdrawn so it sounds like the relationship is likely over and you are in a fortunate position of not ending up responsible for someone for years and not being able to sponsor anyone else for 3 years. If you do get back together you can refile but it is important not to misrepresent that you are in a relationship if the relationship has broken down. It may be painful at the moment but it is best to break things off earlier if things are not going to work out.
