Hello everyone,

I am finishing my masters degree (only thesis remained). My study permit is valid till April 30, 2017. Masters degree normally takes 2-3 years to finish, but mine has taken more because of personal issues, sickness, etc. so I had to extend my study permit in the past twice... but I am hopeful I'll finish writing my thesis by April of 2017.

I am married and my wife (citizen living here in Canada) is sponsoring me for applying for PR. We are submitting the application in first week of January.

Here's my quesion:
What happens if I don't graduate by April 30, 2017?
What is the best course of action for me? inland outland etc.

If you're already here in Canada, then why not apply inland. The processing times are the same now. When you do, apply for the Open Work Permit that you can apply for with the inland application. This means you can remain in Canada while they process your application, and 4 months from the day you apply, you should have the OWP in hand that you can work.

I just answered in the thread you created.

To Study, you need a study permit. To Work, you need a work permit. You can hold both.

This is exactly the part of my question I am interested in. Chances are I'll finish my masters by the expiry date of my study permit, but I'm wondering what happens if not?

If you don't hold a valid study permit, you cannot study until are approved again, or you are granted your PR.

Regarding your studies, if by mid-April you realize you won't be able to finish on time, you could apply to extend your study permit. You don't actually need a renewed study permit by April 30, but you must have applied to renew it before that date. By applying before your status expires, you will be on an "implied status" which will give you more time to finish.

Also, probably that applying for an open work permit at the same time as applying for sponsored PR is your best option, as if you apply now you would likely get your work permit by early May. Another option would be to apply for post-graduation work permit. However, I cannot find the processing time for that and I don't know if one would be cheaper or not.

My wife and I mailed our PR application.

What happens if I can't apply to extend my study permit by end of April? I'd appreciate if you can guide me. Thanks.

I will not be able to graduate by then, and there are some obstacles that may delay me being prepared to apply for extension of my study permit! What would be the best course of action?

Hi, may I ask if you're able to obtain your study permit even if your wife is Canadian? Or were you still single when you applied for a study permit? I'm looking for similar case with me. I'm married to a Canadian but really have no intention to stay in Canada after my studies as he is going to accept a long-term assignment for work after my school. Thank you.
