Hi all,

My husband is a Canadian citizen and we've been living in Ireland for the last number of years. We're considering relocating to Canada permanently and I understand he can sponsor me for Permanent Residency.

I've been researching the process online and the Permanent Residency application looks manageable. However, I haven't been able to figure out how the process works from beginning to end. I know the PR application takes months; can I enter Canada during this time? And if I want to work in Canada before the application is processed, do I need another visa to do so?

Any help with this would be hugely appreciated!

Hi

You can enter Canada as a visitor while the PR app is processing.

Have a look at the Ireland IEC program and see if there are any spots. Otherwise, the only way to work before becoming a PR is to find a Canadian employer willing to go through the LMIA process. This is very difficult to do and will take many months. The PR process would most likely be done before then.

Hi Canuck,

Thanks so much for your help on this. Will it have an impact on the PR application if we begin the application from Ireland but relocate to Canada before it's processed?

As long as you do so legally, then no. Remember, you're technically 'visiting' and not 'moving to' or 'relocating' to Canada until your PR is approved.

No, it will have no impact on the PR app.

I've started the IEC application process and I'm now just hoping that I'll be invited to apply.

I'm also getting started with the PR application; it's early days but I looked through the various application forms today in order to get an idea of what kind of supporting documentation I'll need. A number of the questions on the Sponsored Spouse Questionnaire are phrased in such a way that they suggest that my sponsor is living in Canada - e.g. have you visited your sponsor, have they visited you, how do you keep in touch. However, my husband and I have lived together in Ireland for the duration of our relationship.

I just want to be sure that it's possible for us to apply while we're living outside of Canada. Am I looking at the wrong forms?

Any help appreciated!

The forms are generic and assume the sponsor is in Canada. There is absolutely no issue with applying for sponsorship from outside Canada.

For those questions, just put "We live together".

Canuck - I took your advice and registered for the IEC programme. I was thrilled to receive an invitation to apply yesterday!

So now I'm working on both applications; the PR Spousal Sponsorship and also the IEC in the hopes that the IEC will not take as long to process. I'm aware that I only have 20 days to complete this application once I begin so I'm trying to request all necessary documentation before I start the application itself.

I know this isn't the right forum to post questions about the IEC, but as you've been so helpful to date I thought I'd run this question by you. One of the documents I'll need is a police certificate. I've requested that from the Irish police, but I'm not sure if I'll also need to provide one for other countries I've resided in. I spent a year in Australia (on a working holiday visa almost 10 years ago) and lived in the Netherlands for over a year (around 14 years ago). It feels like ancient history to me, but the CIC website states 'you may need to provide police certificates for more than one country' and I haven't been able to find the criteria for this.

Many thanks!

If you were over 18 when you were in those countries, you'll definitely need them for the PR app and should request them now.

As for the IEC app, I don't know whether they require all of the PCCs or just the one from Ireland. I suggest you post that question in the Foreign Workers section of the forum.
