Hi All,

I need some expert advise:
I am in a relationship and have got my PR last month. I just need some clarification for planning the future:

1. When I should married - before my first landing or after I move to Canada, come back and then get married?
2. What would be the process for both the approaches above?
3. If I move to Canada and applies for sponsorship form there, how much approx. processing time does it take to get the sponsorship done?
4. While the application is in process, can my spouse visit me and for how much time can she come and visit during this processing?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Do not get married before you land in Canada. If you do, you have to tell CIC and the visa office - your current PR visa will be canceled, you will have to add your spouse to your application, and then the visa office will process your spouse's application and you will be issued new visas. This will delay things considerably, and in addition if your spouse is not admissible (because of health problems or security concerns) you will not be admissible either.

It is better to land in Canada, get your PR card, then go back and get married. Then you can sponsor your spouse. The time it takes for sponsoring depends on the country your spouse is from.

She can visit you during processing if she comes from a country where people do not need a visa to visit Canada. If she does need a visa, she can still visit you, but only if she is able to get a TRV. To do so, she has to show ties to her country. They are often difficult to get.

We are from India and on CIC website I see that the processing time for Spousal Sponsorship is around 11-15 months.

Since TRV looks to be a challenging way to go, can my spouse visit Canada on a tourist\Visitor Visa? I see that the processing time for visitor visa is for 6months. After 6 months can she go back to India and again come back for another 6months while the application is in process?

The TRV is a visitor/tourist visa. If she gets one, she can come to Canada. About one month before it expires, she can apply to extend it. This is usually granted for people with PR applications in process. She could re-enter only if the visa is multiple-entry.

To get one, she has to show ties to India or another country such that the visa officer will believe she will leave Canada and not overstay her visa.
