Hi Everyone,

I am very new here and have gone through a bunch of threads seeking information. I have been with my partner for a while, we met online. He has been up here a few times to visit when he has a few days off of work. We are planning to get married sooner than later as it turns out I am pregnant.

He currently works in retail but was in the US Army for 10 years. No criminal record.

What is our best way to go about this? We won't be married for 2 years and I am worried that my income won't qualify for me to sponsor him. He will be bringing about $10,000 with him.

My step dad recent immigrated from England but it was a very different situation.

Any and all assistance in appreciated.

There is no minimum income requirement to sponsor a spouse, although you should be able to prove how he will support himself.

Also if you're not going to be married for two years, then the only way you can apply before that is common law. And it doesn't seem like you're in a common law relationship? And it could be difficult to establish one without him having some sort of work permit etc to come to Canada

If you want to go the common-law route, he can come to Canada as a visitor for 6 months and then either apply for a visitor extension or visit hone briefly and come back for another 6 months. This is how we did it. The only problem is he won't be able to work or get Canadian healthcare during this time. If money is an issue, he would be free to return to the US to work after one complete year of living together and can save up money whilst his application is being processed.
