Hello everyone,

I'm in a pretty tricky situation and have no idea how to go about it. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm 18 years old canadian citizen by birth and planning on marrying my fiance who is 30 years old Brazilian national in Canada. Our relationship is genuine and we have emails, photographs, cards etc to prove it.He will probably come to Canada on a visitors visa. I will join college in a few months from now and wanted to know what are the financial requirements I have to fulfill. My fiance can prove with a bank statement that he is more than capable of handling his own financial needs.
I do not have a job yet and even if I do get one I will be a full time student so I wont be making much. My father is willing to 'co-sign' the application saying he will help financially.

Do you think its possible for me to sponsor my fiance? Will immigration believe our relationship is genuine because of our age gap? Even though my father will co-sign (co-sponsor) will I be able to prove I can financially support him? Do I also need to prove I can pay for my education now because I was thinking of getting student loans?

Please help!! Is it hopeless??

There is no financial requirement to sponsor a spouse, the only requirement is that you are not receiving welfare, bankrupt or have a criminal record etc

Your father co-signing the application is a good idea

Having a student loan is fine, I believe they don't check for things like loans and credit card debt

The only potential issue here could be the age difference, just make sure you include lots of proof and include a detailed description of how you met and how your relationship has developed

If you have lots of good proof you should be fine

There is no income requirement to sponsor a spouse. However you do need to show how you intend to support yourself and your spouse. CIC just want to make sure you will not go on social assistance.

Your father cannot co-sign for your spouse. There are no co-signers allowed for spousal PR sponsorship. However you can include your father's letter that he will support you and your spouse such as providing a place to stay at his house, etc. Anything to help alleviate CiC's concern about you going on welfare.

Due to your age different, it may trigger an interview to determine whether your relationship is genuine. I know age differences are common but I think in your case, being 18 and not quite considered to be an adult and your partner being 30.

Don't worry too much as long as your relationship is real, the PR process will go through at some point. Expect the unexpected. So be prepared for any possible interviews and also be prepared that your application may not go fast as you expect it to go.

Good luck and god speed.

The father cannot co-sign spousal PR application. He can provide a letter stating that he will support their accommodation and the like.

The form may say that so that it can be used to sponsor dependents and or parents/grandparents.

But the guide also say that co-signers are not allowed for spousal PR sponsorship.

So don't I need to prove that I make a certain amount of money a year to sponsor? I don't even need a job?
Correct me if I'm wrong but if I can prove that my family will support us ( house, food, utilities etc) then I will be fine?

You will do fine if you can prove to CIC that you won't go on social assistance. Support from family to cover cost will help alleviate CiC's concern.
