I'm living in a common law relationship in the UK currently with my partner of 2 years. I'm pregnant and we want to return to Canada and have the baby there and live there permanently. I qualify to sponsor him as a Canadian citizen living overseas because we intend to live there permanently, but I am due to give birth in October so we only have 4 and a bit months to get all this done! What kind of waiting times has everyone run into, and can he come with me to Canada and wait out the application processing time in Canada even if we apply overseas??

You can find the London processing times here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp#europe

Currently, it looks like 30% are done in 2 months, 50% are done in 3 months, 70% are done in 6 months, and 80% are done in 8 months.

It probably depends on how clear-cut your application is and whether they have any doubts, whether there's missing information or something they need to clarify, etc.

We're trying to get ours done as quickly as possible too. We have had the Medical and we've sent off for the Criminal Check. I'm also Canadian with my partner in the UK. I'm just waiting on my T4 slips from Canada so I can do my Canadian tax return and declare my income.

It will vary case to case, but they can be quick!
I'm also Canadian living in the UK and sponsored my British husband. We sent our file to Mississauga 4 Jan, it was received 8 Jan (they didn't start processing it until 29 January). London started processing it mid February and he had his passport request 3 weeks later. From us posting it to Canada, to actually receiving his passport with visa inside, it took just under 3 months (collected passport in London 1 April).

I think it does depend not only on the straight forward-ness of the case, but also how many background checks, etc they need to do if he's lived in other countries, etc. I hope you get it all sorted quickly, best of luck and congratulations on the expectant baby!! :)

It can vary alot i'm was about a week 1 1/2 behind cowtowngirl and my file is in London and they started processing it on the 26th Feb we should have had passport requests just after cowtowngirl. But we are still waiting, alot of the London applications from January and February havn't been finished yet so it appears they have slowed down alittle.

Keep in mind that the times posted on cic do not include sponsorship approval which is an additional 30 days +.

All in all 4.5 months is kinda doable if the stars align, but that all depends how long your spouse has to wait for a medical. My husband had his done in Bristol and had to wait 6 weeks just to get in for an appt, it took us about two+ weeks of that to get together all of the necessary info for the app as well - like a police check, letters of support from family members, and photos etc. The process from the day we booked the appt and started getting the forms started till the day we received the passport was 4.5 months.

My advice... get your butt in motion!!!!! Though it might be a bit longer for commonlaw, but I am not sure.

Best of luck. And congrats on the baby :)
