Hi guys,

I'm looking way ahead here. Still not a PR but I'm in the process of becoming one. My question is with regards to sponsoring my mother. Should my father and all my siblings be included in her application? Or just the dependent children?

Also, can she be accompanied by my sister who's a dependent?

I've read the guidelines but just wanted to clarify.

As always, thank you very much for the info.

All her dependents (including your father, and any of your siblings who are under the age of 22* and not married or in a common-law relationship) must be included on the application, and examined (medical, police clearance etc).

It's entirely up to you whether they are listed as accompanying or non-accompanying, but they do have to be examined.

A few notes:

1. If any of the other siblings are under 22 but don't want to move to Canada, it may be worth considering listing them as accompanying anyway, and getting PR status, even if they later lose it by not being in Canada.

2. Any dependent children need to remain unmarried right up until they become a PR. If they turn 22, that's OK as age is locked in, however marital status is not locked in, and if they get married or enter a CL relationship they no longer qualify.

3. * If 22 or older over it's possible they may still count as dependent if in full time education, or disabled:

The other thing that you need to keep in mind is that you need to meet the Income requirements for ALL of the family members whether they are accompanying or not. And that if one is criminally or medically inadmissible, they are ALL inadmissible.

Thank you very much! This is very very helpful information!!

A couple more questions -

With regards to income, I plan on starting the sponsorship immediately after I find a job. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to meet the income requirement at this point even if I ask my spouse to co-sign for me. As I understand, it takes about 3 years to receive sponsorship approval. Will it be okay to start the application as soon as I get a job or should I wait 12 months after to show that I have met the income requirements?

It's also said in the guide to provide a separate application for each family member that wants to move to Canada. As mentioned, I plan to sponsor my mom and have her accompanied by my sister who is a dependent. Should I include a separate application for my sister as well? I'm thinking the answer to this question is a yes but I just want to make sure.

Finally, my dad may have some serious medical issues. Will it be okay to just leave him totally out of the application process? I understand that it will be impossible to sponsor him at a later date if I do this. I'm just scared that because of his condition that the rest of my family's application might be affected.

As always, thank you very much!!

:o Oh my god! I never knew that. We want to eventually sponsor my partner's parents one day so that's good info to know! Especially the medically inadmissible one because obviously as they get older, they're more at risk of suffering conditions that pair with age. Best get them on the vitamins!

No, you must meet the income requirements when you apply and throughout the application.

How old is your sister? She must be a dependent (under 22) or, if she is older than 22, must have been continuously enrolled as a full time student still dependent upon the parents. If she meets those requirements, then yes, complete an application for her as well.

NO, you cannot leave your dad off of the application. He doesn’t have to come to Canada BUT he must meet the admissibility requirements (as does your mother and any dependent children). If your father is medically inadmissible, the whole application will be refused for everyone.

The reason for this is that if CIC allowed you to leave him out of this application and your mother was approved, she would be able to sponsor him later as her spouse and he would be exempt from excessive demand. This is NOT allowed and if you leave him out, that would be misrepresentation and your family would be barred from entering Canada for at least 2 years and would probably never be able to come at a later date because their credibility would be in the toilet.

Thank you very much, rjessome. I appreciate the reply.

Yes my sister is under 22 so I'll include an application for her as well.

I'll have my dad take medication and put him on a very healthy diet so that he'll be as healthy as can be when the time for the medical exam comes.

Thanks again for the info.
