Yes, I know that I can't sponsor an animal to be a Canadian citizen, but we may be bringing a pet with us when we move to Canada. Does anyone know what hope we will need to jump through to bring an animal with us?

Which are you bringing, and from where?

My wife brought her dog from Moscow. She had him vetted before he left (From Russia, a valid rabies vaccination certificate is required -- an EU pet passport will work).

To be honest, the dog was soo small, that they didn't pay any attention to him at the border -- technically an illegal, I guess?

We brought a cat in at Christmas. I had proof of current rabies vaccination with me but the border agent completely ignored the cat. On a side note, quietest cat ever. Hardly a peep during the 12 hour car trip.

We aren't sure. We have been wanting to get something for a while, but have been forced to keep putting it off. It would be coming from Russia.

So all that is needed is a rabies vaccine? I thought it would be much more.

What about restrictions on the flight? Is it possible to bring puppies/small dogs as "carry on's" or would they always need to go with luggage?

For mammals yes. Avians, reptiles, and friends all have different requirements. My wife's dog was carry on (he is smaller than a cat). That would be an airline specific thing.

BTW: Check with your airline BEFORE getting to the airport about the pet. The bribe happens at the airport, if you didn't pre-clear the pet. Wife found that out, too.

Does anyone know how bad it is for animals on board airplanes? I heard that they just get put in the cargo hold and that it's cold and loud. However the IATA website says that animals are usually more comfortable being stored than in the cabin. It says that they go to a heated area that's quieter than the cabin.

Also, do all airlines let pets travel? Are there any airlines that offer better/more comfortable trips for pets?

And also very curious what happens during a long layover? Does it stay locked up with the luggage?

Usually they will pressurize the cargo area so the animal can have heat and oxygen.

As to which airlines, my wife's trip with her toy breed dog was on Finnair. Besdies the airport bribe in Moscow, it was an easy experience.

Well of course they have a heated pressurized area. Otherwise your pet would be frozen and suffocated by 12,000 ft, lol. That might be bad for business.

I assume that would be in the cargo hold. How much do they charge of its brought as carry on? Or is it considered just a piece of "baggage" and the are no extra fees.

With Air Canada it's $200 to take your pet on board with you. It's the cheapest and safest way to travel with a pet.

There is no standardized rate. You will need to ask the air line. Finnair was $88 and he was carried on. He stayed under the seat.
