Hi all! I'm a Canadian citizen sponsoring my spouse, who's a U.S. citizen, for permanent residence. He currently resides with me in Canada and we are applying outland. There are a few questions on the Sponsor Questionnaire that I'm not quite sure how to fill out...listed below.

5. Highest level of education completed.
Grad school (2 yrs), I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree...so I checked 'post-graduate studies' and wrote in 2 years. Do I leave the others for college, high school, elementary school blank, or do I fill them in also? I notice it allows you to check multiple boxes.

7. Employers for the past 5 years, starting with current employer.
Can I include self-employment ventures as well? I only had one actual employer in the past 5 years, but it was technically more of a freelance gig that paid regularly for 6 months in 2010/2011. (Prior to that, I was attending grad school in the US for writing and publishing, and held other positions there and in college before moving back to Canada, as well as working on several projects.) Currently, my parents are supporting me until I get back on my feet, as things have been rather crazy for me the past few years (depression/anxiety which is improving, moving twice, etc), though I have always been working on something. At the moment, I'm developing a business in the healing arts, but not actively bringing in income yet; I'm also planning to move to a smaller community in the near future and will be pursuing work there. I want CIC to know I have initiative and a will to work and will be outlining a plan of support. I'm just afraid my employment history will look too...sparse, if I only include employers. I will gladly explain the situation to them in detail, either way.

11. Are you currently living in Canada?
Yes. Since when? Not sure how to answer this…I was born and raised in Canada, but did reside in the States for 8 years while I attended college and grad school, and technically only moved back in 2012, but I kept my ‘permanent residence’ as my parents’ address for all my tax returns and important documents during that time. Should I write down the date I moved back?

14. Has your spouse/partner met any of your close friends or family? Yes. A lot of them. Would it help at all if I included additional names on a separate sheet of paper, or just choose six to fill out? Does it matter which six I choose (ie. should I choose ones that might have more of a relationship with my spouse, or will just any six do)?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

I'm curious about the "since when" question as well...cause I was born there...but spent 2.5 years on work contracts outside, still maintaining my residency.....the problem is there are many definitions of residency depending on whether you look at tax, health benefits, etc.

So I will be watching the answers to your questions. Good luck!

Not sure about your first 3 questions. The last one, the friends, pick the 6 that are closest to you. If you want you can write on a separate page that there are lots more, but you have picked the ones who have the closest relationship to you/your OH.

1-you can fill what your higher education is. (if you have masters, then check post grad, you can also check bachelor)
2-well just write who every your employer was in the past 5 years and for self employment part. Just write self employed.
3-yes the date you started living in Canada (not sure though, if you have to write, the date that you moved back, beacuse you only left for study. Not to live permanent there)
4-put very close family and friends only (and you can use seperate paper)

Thanks you guys! I appreciate the help.

I'm still a little confused on questions 7 and 11. For 7, there isn't actually a self-employment part--it just says, "give details of all employers you have worked for over the past five years" and asks for names and addresses. It seems like self-employment isn't appropriate here, but I'm not sure why they don't take that into account? As for 11, I found an older thread with a similar question and it seems like I should put down the date I moved back to Canada as opposed to my date of birth, but I'm not sure if my permanent residence/tax situation has had any effect (if it makes any difference, I don't believe I actually paid taxes in Canada during that time). Can anyone else weigh in?

Attach a letter to that form stating that you were self employed this period. Write your 1 employment in the form and separate piece of paper write letter that you were self employed this period.
I still think it should be the date you were born, because you just went to US for study not to live there. I am not 100% sure about this. Can anyone else answer this part

My lawyer told us to answer question 5. With all levels of school. So on a separate sheet of paper we gave all the names and dates and locations of all schooling. Kindergarten, middle school, (for us) hotel school, chef school, and apprenticeship school etc etc. More is better then missing information.
Same with question 7 don't be vague include all information of employment
Question 11 I wrote a list of literally every friend we have met including dates and relationship. I did the same format for our family members we have met.

I hope this helps

Thanks everyone! I'll attach a separate sheet and write down as many details/explanations as possible. For the employment, then, should I mention anything beyond the 5-year period they specify? Or keep it within 5 years? I'm happy to go beyond and mention other relevant self-employment, employment, and schooling, as I think it paints a clearer picture.

Can anyone else weigh in on #11? I've seen conflicting opinions on this one, in terms of which date to put down for people who were born and raised in Canada but took up residence elsewhere for a few years, then came back. I was paying taxes in Canada and the US during this time, but living primarily in the US. I suppose if I don't get a definite answer, I can just explain it on the separate sheet...
