Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions.

Im an permanent resident living in canada. I am 25 years old and i got married in jamaica to my husband who is the same age. Im not working but im in a two year program and is recieving osap. I have two kids with my previous relationship and i was on social assiatance for a while. I only have my sister with me here in canada and she has her family and i was wondering if i could get my husband here to help me while im at school full time.

1: Can i sponsor my husband
2. Does me being on social assiatance before affect the application
3: can my sister wite him an invitation letter before i put in the sponsorship papers?
4. Does getting osap affect me sponsoring him?

Thanks!

1. Yes
2. You need to confirm with provincial authorities that you are, in fact, off social assistance list. You will be denied ability to sponsor if your name remains on the list.
3. Writing an invitation letter to her brother in law makes sense for TRV but it makes more sense if you are the one writing letter of invitation. But since he is married to you, his ability to get TRV will likely be denied since there is a stronger connection to Canada than to Jamaica through you. Writing a letter of invitation is moot. She can add a letter of support to your PR application though to help strengthen genuineness of your marriage.

4. Osap does not affect ability to sponsor but you need to show how you can support yourself and him financially without going to welfare.

Thanks for your respond

1. How would i go about conforming it?
2. I was wondering if i get a part time job and save up what i can before putting in the application, if that would be better.
3. How much money would they be looking at me to have ?
4. In your opinion would it be better to get help from a lawyer ?

How much funds do you have approximately in your savings? Are you almost done your program? Is your husband working? Does he have savings? Will it be easy for him to get a job in Canada given his profession? You should be off welfare at least for a few months before applying so you can show a pattern of being able support yourself. If you were on welfare for a longer period of time you should be off welfare for a bit longer showing that you have become independent and you will not return to welfare.

1. Contact the provincial welfare authority in your province.

2. It would take you a long time to save up much with a part-time job.

3. There is no specific amount. They need to see that you can support yourselves in Canada without welfare. As you have been on welfare, your financials would likely have extra scrutiny.

4. If you could afford a decent lawyer, you wouldn't have to ask these questions.

You should try to get a job. What does your husband do for work? What is the relationship history?
