I thinking of asking a relative who is a permanent resident to serve as a my sponsor. I'm want to apply for a study permit. I need to get these answers before making a decision

1. Can he be allowed to open a bank account in my name in Canada and deposit funds? Something like a GIC?

2. What are the pros and cons of using him as a sponsor ?

You can have as many sponsors as you possibly can. Provided they're related to you. You don't have to have a bank account in your name. But if he can, then by all means. But as far as I know and as far as what I did is concerned, I didn't have to create a bank account. I used my sponsor's bank account details, payslip and proved of relationship.

As long as you can prove you're related to your sponsor, there's no con.
