Hi,

Does anybody know that when you sponsor your spouse from outside Canada. In the sponsorship assessment; what do they really look into? Financial, Criminal, etc... If so how strong your financial status should be? and what other things they look into

No one knows as the situation is different for each family.

The minimum requirement is that the sponsor must be Canadian, and has "plans" to move back together with the applicant. The rest of the requirements are the same as per PR or Canadian sponsor living in Canada already. So the criminal aspect or lack of, that would be the same.

So it comes down to the relocation story...how strong the story appears to CIC...is there a place to live yet, is there money/account back in Canada...these are the tangible things, which shows there's already preparation to go back. I believe having them in place would be strong support already...may not necessarily be the amount, although I cannot imagine why having more money already back in Canada would not help the story. Then there's less tangible stuff if these are not available, like friends/family written letters showing they'll let you stay there, letters you sent out applying for jobs (although I question how effective these are as employers would not wait for 9-12 months or more for a candidate). Many posters share these experiences as effective.

A lot of people in this forum have been successful sponsoring while not living in Canada.

Are you having trouble in the sponsoring phase? If yes, you should order GCMS notes for the sponsorship part to see if you can learn anything.

Who is not eligible to sponsor

You may not be eligible to be a sponsor if you:

did not meet the terms of a sponsorship agreement in the past,
did not pay alimony or child support even though a court ordered it,
get social assistance for reasons other than being disabled,
were convicted of
an offence of a sexual nature,
a violent crime,
an offence against a relative that resulted in bodily harm or
an attempt or threat to commit any such offences, depending on the details of the case, such as
the type of offence,
how long ago it occurred and
whether a record suspension was issued (see Sponsorship bar for violent crime below),
were sponsored as a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner in the past and became a permanent resident of Canada less than five years ago (see Five-year sponsorship bar below)
did not pay back an immigration loan, made late payments or missed payments,
are in prison or
have declared bankruptcy which has yet to be discharged.

Other things not on this list may stop you from being able to sponsor a relative.
