Hey y'all.

This problem seems to be quite common with Indian passports and has caused us numerous headaches when applying for Canadian specific documents, check-in's during travel and has even caused us to miss a couple of flights.

The problem -

My wife holds an Indian Passport and a Canadian PR card. Surname is blank on Indian Passport and Given Name has both her first name and last name.

All of her Canadian documents (PR, SIN, Health Card, Drivers License, etc.,) are based on the above held Indian passport.

She should be eligible for citizenship in a few months.

Questions -

1. Should we go through the process of splitting her name on the Indian Passport BEFORE applying for Canadian Citizenship or AFTER?
2. If we go through the process of splitting her first name and last name on the Indian Passport, she will need a new PR card with the updated name. Do we have to go through the legal name change process here in Canada for this?
3. If we go through the process of name split BEFORE applying for Citizenship, are these the following things that need to be updated in Canada? Am I missing anything?
a. PR Card
b. SIN Number (?) - will she get a new SIN number?
c. Health Card
d. Drivers License
e. Update her employer with the new details
f. Bank Accounts

We are based in Manitoba if that helps.

Anyone else on the same boat? Appreciate your help/input here.

She can also keep her current name. No action in this case.

Sure, that’s an option but we would honestly like to get it changed and not have to deal with the hassle of having to clarify this every single time. Be it an airline or be it the EI office or some other federal document.

If you have the time, I would recommend going through the legal name change process here in full, and getting your driver's license and others done here. (In addition to Indian passport).

That should also give you time to change the PR card (check the PR card info for what is needed for that, usually it's the legal name change doc + one or two IDs already changed).

This may seem a bit more time consuming but is 'cleaner' and will remove the likely / possible issues that can come up.
