Special Documents for non-Canadian to marry Canadian-citizen in Canada

My boyfriend is a Canadian citizen and I am a Chinese citizen, we both
live in Shanghai, China now. We plan to get married in Vancouver the
end of this year.

These days, we are preparing for the documents for applying for
marriage licence, and just wonder except for the following documents
which are listed on british columbia government website,
are there any other special documents required for us to register for
this marriage:

1. primary identification in the form of a Birth Certificate,
IMM/Immigration form, Permanent Resident or Citizenship card
confirming 1) full legal names
2) birth date 3) place of birth should be provided for both parties
2. current marital status
3. address

You need your birth certificates and passport or other ID and if you were married before, you need proof of that marriage having ended via annulment, divorce or former spouses death.

You can marry a Canadian Citizen even if you are just here on holiday as long as you can get into the Country, either a visitor visa or whatever means you are using. If you were married before you have to have a copy of the divorce decree and ID... your address, PR card or citizenship cards are not relevant and is not asked when issued a license to get married in Canada. They just want to know that you are single and legally allowed to be married since bigamy is not legal. After you are married you will have to go through the process of immigration or whatever your circumstances are but as far as marriage is concerned its easy and definitely allowed.

My husband was divorced in the U.k . We had to get a letter of opinion from an Ontario Lawyer . I only found this out when i went to book the date . It may be different in VANCOUVER .

It doesnt matter where he was divorced area, country, doesnt matter as long as he has a final divorce decree, the final piece of paper that says he is finally divorced.

That information is incorrect . My husband had his divorce papers , but he was divorced in the U.K so we had to send to red river for approval,after we had a letter of opinion from an Ontario lawyer . It does not show on any forum that you had to do that .It was only when i booked the date they told us .

I agree with Taffy. Each province has their own rules, but I do recall that Alberta and Ontario both had the requirement that you get authorization from the province if one of the spouses had been previously married, and divorced outside of Canada.

I am still searching for clarification on the BC regulations.


When you apply for sponsorship and PR, then that it true, that you only need the divorce decree, but if you want to get married in Canada, you'll need a few more documents.
