the sponsor supporting documents 18 asks that if you are employed to get letter from them. Is this an absolute requirement? It's not a problem but will slow me down by 2 days. The header says you must have all the docs or the app fails. I'm Canadian sponsoring spouse so no minimum income is required so why do they need to know who my soon to be ex employer is?

I would say get the letter anyways. An employment letter isn't just about having a job, it also shows what kind of earning potential you have. Just my thought, purely from a professional standpoint, I am a total newbie to this whole immigration business, and maybe more experienced persons will have a different answer.

In my opinion, you have two options. You could either wait a little and declare yourself unemployed (which is perfectly fine as you don't need any minimum income for spousal applications), or hurry up and ask your boss for a letter. I am not too sure of this, but you might have to update this information later on, when you're unemployed. But you might not so it could be easier to just get that letter from your boss.
Either way, you have to provide either the letter from your boss or an explanation that you are unemployed, and whatever details you want to add about how you'll support your spouse in Canada.

It is not an absolute requirement, but having a job looks better than being unemployed. They can't reject you because of a lack of a job, but the visa officer does want to see how you and your spouse plan to support yourselves, and having a job helps. People have been rejected because the VO did not believe either spouse could support themselves in Canada. If it is only a delay of 2 days, I think it is worth it to get the letter.

I submitted our app with only 2 weeks remaining on my then contract... I was extended on the same contract to the end of December less than a week after we sent in our app with the employment letter that indicated my term of employment would soon expire. We had no problem with the sponsorship approval. I would include the employment letter and indicate your plans to look for work and/or how to intend to support yourself if you are not actively seeking out a new position. Hope this helps!
