How about "some who were born as white, identify as black"? That didn't work out so well for Rachel Dolezal!
As it happens, I know quite a few "whites" who identify as "black". Many African Americans accept them as part of the "black" community, many don't. I also know some "blacks" who identify as "white" -- their reception is generally mixed in both communities.

Self-identity is a complex, multi-faceted matter that sometimes supersedes empirical and legal facts. No one is better able to define one's self-identity than oneself. It is foolish, counterproductive, and sometimes debilitatingly painful when self-identities are imposed from the outside.

Ms. Dolezal's "passing" as black to get ahead in her career and social life is no different than a person of black heritage "passing" as white to get ahead in their career and social life. Those who treat the two differently are exposing their own racist attitudes.

The necessity that gives rise to such phenomena is far more a commentary on the underlying culture and its institutionalized racism than it is commentary on the individuals who "pass".
