Good Evening Everyone,

My girlfriend of 3 years and myself just celebrated the birth of our baby in Colombia on September 19th.

I apologize if this has been asked..but here it goes...

I am under the impression that my son automatically gains Canadian citizenship from me....I am born and raised in Canada. When I went to the government website it says the processing time is about 12 months. I am relocating in Canada to another province due to a business venture that I am apart of and would like to have my son and my gf with me. We have been together for 3 years and have even shared an apartment in Bogota..I have gone enough that some of the Customs ppl know me by name..LOL

My question is, I am awaiting the call on when I need to be in Canada. As stated, I want my son and gf to be in Canada as well as it will be a better place for my son to be raised (no offense to Colombia). What is the quickest way to go through the process? Should I retain an immigration attorney and if so...anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance and again, apologies if this question has been posed.

If you have lived with your gf for 1 continuous year you can sponsor her for PR. You will need proof that you have lived together for the 1 year. She can try for a TRV to visit Canada with you but chances of approval aren’t great. Sponsorship takes around a year. You will also need to prove that you will be relocating to Canada permanently. In terms of your child you need to get the recognition of his citizenship started. It will take some time.

Hey Canuck,

Thanks for that! I am enroute to Canada for a few weeks and then back in Colombia. Should I go to the consulate in Bogota or visit an immigration center in Canada? As well, I was just thinking of hiring an immigration attorney to get everything done. Thoughts?

The consulate in Bogota will not provide advice and there is similarly no IRCC centre in Canada that will do that. If you want advice, you'll need to hire an immigration lawyer. However many (most) people here have done it themselves. So that's certainly an option provided you're ready to do the research yourself.

TRV process:
https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visa.asp

Spousal Sponsorship:
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/spouse-partner-children.html

Proof of citizenship for your child:
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/proof-citizenship.html

***Proof of citizenship applications are taking a long time to process right now (1 year?). In addition to applying for this, you'll also want to apply for a temporary passport for your child so that they can travel to Canada before the proof of citizenship is approved and you get a permanent passport.
