Hi guys, first of all Im RSol, Im a mexican student and I want to go and study in Canada, in fact I just got my acceptance letter from Niagara College!! :)

Well, the problem is this: I was looking at the checklist provided by the visa application center's website, and then I saw that if the applicant is working he has to make either of this:

Code:
- Get a permit from your job or proof that he must come back to work
- If you have quit your job, or are planning to do so, add a reference letter from your former employer and a personal letter explaining the motive for which you quit/will quit your job, the motive of your travel to Canada and your plans after finishing your program. It may require an interview.
Well, I am a Lawyer here in Mexico, I studied laws and work at the Justice System in one of the lowest positions, but I applied to an enviromental technician program, which has nothing to do with law. I'm fearing that they will turn down my application because in my job the maximum permit I can get is 1 year (and I obviously understand it) and the duration of my program is 2 years, AND if I quit my job, then I fear they will see me just as an immigrant and deny it, since its pretty suspicious that a lawyer, working in a place for 3 years suddenly quits to go and study an enviromental technician diploma.

I've been really stressed this whole time, first trying to get the transcripts from my schools (which took ages) and then applying really late, and when I thought that everything was perfect I notice this :(

Makes me feel wish I had never worked

Any input or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Because after finishing school and getting to know how Laws work here in Mexico I did not like it anymore, thats why I chose this program, because I would like to study something different.

Usually the VO reject a lot of application based on this one point "Mismatch" so as your both degrees are not matching therefore, the chances are high you will get a visa rejection on the same grounds. It is advised to take admission in a relevant field.

But keep in mind that I have seen these rejections only for Asian students, so things might be different in Mexico.

Hey guys I'm back, I've received my letter of introduction and my travel visa glued to my passport. I've also bought my plane ticket.

Well, I still have some questions and I would appreciate all help!

1.- I want to live alone in an appartment. How easy or difficult is it to rent in Canada as a foreigner? How long could it take? I will be staying at a hotel for a few days while I find a place and move in, how long would you recommend?? Can it be done in advance(through phone/online)? how risky is it? I've read in some places that the owners mail the keys and lease.

2.- Anybody living in St. Catharines/Niagara region: Is it a good idea to use a bike to move around? (school, groceries, etc)

Those are my current doubts, thanks for your input!

Hi Congrats!

I am confused how you get travel VISA instead of study visa, anyways I am an asian and it might be different for South Americans.
Niagara is small city and travelling is not a big problem, secondly License rules are so different and strict I would not suggest anyone of thinking to buy any vehicle at starting days.
I live in Toronto - Basic cost of rent on sharing basis is somewhere around $250-550 depending upon number of people you share. Avg 1-2 bedroom comes with in $800-1000 range. Niagara can be little cheaper though.

Cheers!

Hey Jitu1011, they told me they will issue the student permit at the port of entry, as for the other thing, Mexicans require both a travel visa to enter Canada AND the study permit.

Also, did you have any difficulties in the process of renting? like having to provide any documents to the tenant or other issues :S

How does the process work?? since we are foreigners and they may not be able to check backgrounds...

Yes, you will be issued SP at the POE. You should have the following documents ready with you
a. a valid passport
b. the letter of introduction from the visa office
c. a valid temporary resident visa
d. a copy of the letter of acceptance from the school at which you are permitted to study
e. proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Canada

Reading this would be helpful for arriving in Canada: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-arriving.asp

Toronto and neighboring districts are students attractive places and lot of students are living here and renter know this, there are lot of international students studying in various colleges and universities, renting is not a prob.

you can search www.kijiji.ca/toronto or www.craigslist.ca for your renting needs.

you can check for roommates as well, and when you join your school you will find lot of fellow students to be your prospective roommates.

try search on facebook also for your college forums
