I'm coming to the end of my first year of the IEC program, I already have the Letter and acceptance for my second year, which i plan to take consecutively with zero gap.

The SIN i was issued with my first visa is only valid for one year to tie in with the end of the visa/workpermit. I'll activate my second visa/work permit immediately after the first expires but I'll still need to go to a service Canada centre to get a new social insurance Number.

I was wondering if anyone knows if they will issue me a totally new SIN number or just extend my existing one? I'd obviously prefer the latter as it would make things easier at my job as my position is salaried and any discrepancy in my right to work could cause complications.

If anyone has any insight, that'd be helpful.

Same SIN but with a new validity date.

Even when you are issued a new SIN (for e.g. when you transit from temp resident / worker status to PR, you get a SIN starting with 2 or 3, vs the one with 9 for temp residents), it is logical for the records to have your entire history attached such as credit file. It is a perfectly regular and normal procedure and a lot of people undergo this, so i don't see any possible issue

Thanks! Makes sense! I remember my first SIN application being relatively easy and painless. Hopefully this is the same too!
