My spouse and I are newly married, but I'm currently going to school and doing so off student loans, should I even try sponsoring my spouse? He's from USA and is more than capable of supporting us both, great work history, some post high school education with law enforcement... but we are worried he won't be able to get a work Visa and we are looking at all of our options right away. I just was wondering if we shouldn't even try with me sponsoring him! HELP!

You don't have to have income to qualify to sponsor your spouse. You just can't be bankrupt or on social assistance (welfare). Go ahead and sponsor himn now. :)

Student loans don't count. They are only concerned that the two of you will be able to survive and if he is the breadwinner, that is fine. Just explain your lack of income by the fact that you are studying and he is working now in the US and will be working in Canada as well in the future.

Hi

The financial requirements aren't for spousal applications. I married young, still in school and living with my parents. I put $0 as my income, my husband was in school as well still so $0 income there was well. I was approved as a sponsor and now my husband's application is almost complete :)

See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-other.asp 17-18 months for first stage approval and after that, 17 months for PR. You can not go home while you wait. You must continue to work in the live-in caregiver program or stay in Canada if you are unemployed until you get your first stage approval and open work permit. After that, you can look for another job. If you want to go home for a short visit, you should take care that you have a multiple entry visa so you can re-enter.
