Hi all,

We're mulling over our options at the moment.

My wife would have a good chance of getting a job offer in Canada as a Social Worker. The problem is, with 2 children, her preference is to work part time.

The requirement appears to be a full-time, permanent job offer.

Would she be able to revert to part time shortly after commencing work after emigrating, or is this a strict requirement?

Thanks,

Jamie

Once you've landed, you can always change your plans. There are some restrictions for some categories of economic immigration, but non-PNP FSW does not have such limitations.

Of course, don't say anything that isn't true to CIC - but don't feel you are locked into a job if it turns out not to work with respect to your new life in Canada, either.

Thanks for your reply.

What I was to get a job offer and eventually revert to contract work for a non-Canadian employer whilst still paying Canadian taxes? I'm a contract worker normally.

Is this something you need to report/disclose for residency purposes or, provided we're paying Canadian taxes and contributing to the economy, is this ok?

Thanks,

Jamie

Once you are a permanent resident, you have most of the rights of a Canadian citizen. This includes the right to conduct your own business.

Personally, I've always found the emphasis on employment via the FSW program to be an oddity not in keeping with how things are done in many businesses these days, where professional experts have their own business and contract with others on a short or long term basis to provide essential services, but that's definitely their focus during the PR application process. But once you are in Canada, you are free to work for anyone - including yourself.

The requirement that you file and pay Canadian taxes is an ongoing one, and applies as long as you are a resident of Canada - Citizen, permanent or temporary. But your permanent residency is not dependent upon it (although they now seem to routinely request tax records as one method for confirming residency, but they just care you have filed, not how you earned your income.)

Good luck!
