Skilled Worker v/s Foreign Worker

Hello,

My husband applied for PR under skilled worker in 2006. He passed the required points. To date the application is "under process" with no word of when we can expect a reply. In the meantime I was offered a job Canada in Jan 2009 and the company has processed a work permit for me + open spousal permit for my husband. We have done the medicals and have been told to submit passports for the visa which we will obtain in about a month.

It is ironic that I have read several postings on this forum where it has been indicated that Canada is looking for immigrants to bring in and spend thier money in Canada (buy a house etc) as opposed to getting foreign workers who are just there on temp basis - and in our case it worked out the opposite. Much as we want to come to Canada as PR and put down roots and spend our funds there, we are unable to and instead are only able to come in as temp workers for now.

My question is now that we will be entering Canada on a work permit (2 yrs) rather than as PR what do we do about our funds ? Do we declare our entire financial Portfolio on arrival or as we are not PR we are not required to do so ? If we ARE supposed to declare then WHERE is this done ? If we are bringing in a large amount of funds (in stocks etc) Do you think this will have any positive impact at all on our PR application ? We are burning all our boats in our country and hoping that at least within the 2 years duration of the work permit the PR will come through ? Is this sensible ?

Thank you for any advise / comments.

He applied under the old system of FSW where applications were taking years from some countries. You can get an idea of how long from http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/02a-skilled-fed.asp

If you have heard nothing, it would probably be possible for you to withdraw this application now and get all your fees back and make a new application but if you are already waiting for 3 years, depending on where you applied from, it might be close to finishing. Needless to say, if he wants to stick with this application, you do not say if you were married when he applied or were included on it, if you are not on it, he needs to add you.

You can also if you want to, stick with the old application and make a new one at the same time.

Hi Leon,

Thanks for your input - we WERE married when he applied so we are both on the application. I figure since we've stuck in there for 3 years so far we would be better off continuing to wait it out...... and hope for the best. Do you have any input on the issue of declaration of funds and if this would assist the application in anyway ? When we applied 3 years ago we did not have that much but since then we have been diligently saving and invested well and can easily purchase a house / car out right on arrival - if we do this will it impact our PR application in a positive way in showing that we are contributing to the economy or makes no difference ? Our application was submitted in Nairobi - Kenya. Thanks for any advise.

How much you have in funds does not affect your case to be processed faster. You just need to have the minimum. Just like the points, a guy with 80 points is not processed faster than a guy with 70.

Nairobi, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/02a-skilled-fed.asp#africa average time 45 months so you might be hearing from them soonish.

You need the employer to get you a labour market opinion for the job so you can apply for a work permit.
