Canadian Intellectual Property Office. They are based in Gatineau, so the odds aren't in my favour!

indeed... not so much for me either, I'm completely on the other side of Canada! :-)

If you wish to learn French online at your own pace, I recommend this excellent website:

www.livemocha.com

It is the world's most popular language learning site. Livemocha has over 13 million registered members. You can choose from over 38 languages to learn and I am one of their French instructor. Here is my profile page if you wish to know more about my services :) It helps me to pay for the appeal and visits to my husband in Morocco.

P.S. This is where I met my husband in Spring 2008 :D

I am multilanguale, and french is the first language i learned after my mother language so am very fluent. I will definetely put my husband to french class when he comes in ontario so we can talksh7t about others in public lmao joke :D All i can say is learningg english to french is harder than french to english.

I'm fluent in French (from France) and live in Vancouver. If you're planning on moving to Vancouver, you absolutely don't need to speak a lick of French, as no one here does!

In fact, Mandarin Chinese is a much handier language to speak in Van-city.

Same for Toronto! Here French is pretty much useless (unless applying for govt jobs of course)... and would be much better to learn Chinese, Italian, Punjabi or Tagalog or something since that's more reflective of our cultural makeup here.

However it is great to know a few basic phrases for whenever you visit Quebec. After taking French from elementary to high school, i know enough to do the basic greetings and goodbyes :)

HAHAHA!!!
I've told my husband that I think that CIC should only hire people that have gone through CIC so that we are treated like humans... and so that they feel our pain!!

I'm Canadian and don't remember ANY of the french I learned in school. But there are NO french people here, really so it's fine.

I have yet to run into more than five people who speak French in my boyfriend's city. Maybe because it's a small town, I don't know. But if you start speaking French people just look at you like you're crazy here.

Totally agree. Plus someone who has actually gone through the process is more likely to know the answers to some of the more difficult questions.

and they wouldn't have to worry about any sponsored person going on welfare, since we would all be working for CIC! :-) double benefit... more efficient, motivated employees who actually know what they are talking about, and no risk on going on welfare because we would have a job... I think we should suggest something like this to CIC ! :-)

Thanks for the information! Hubby is learning French from me, since I volunteer in a Kindergarten French Immersion class... So he knows how to sing a Pizza song :P

I'm already bilingual, in English and American Sign Language. I still have a hard time with French, but like I said, I can sing a pizza song!!! ;D
