While I wait for my AOR, I have a question which won't be a concern for me for the next 3 yrs at least.

My understanding is that CIC issues a 2yr conditional PR if you were sponsored by a Canadian spouse. At the completion of those 2 yrs, if the current timeline of the PR process remains the same (inland), I would've lived in Canada for 3 yrs.

At that point, should I be applying for a PR renewal before submitting a citizenship application or the citizenship application will give me implied status until I get my citizenship?

Also: After getting my PR (anywhere between now and March 2015), can I apply for a SIN? Or I need to apply for a SIN as soon as I have my OWP?

Thanks!

The PR card you will be issued will be valid for 5 years (not 2).

There is no "implied status" once you are a PR. If your PR card is due to expire, you should apply to renew it.

Then what is this 2yr "conditional" thing on CIC?

"Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has introduced amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (the Regulations) which apply to spouses, common-law or conjugal partners in a relationship of two years or less with their sponsor and who have no children in common with their sponsor at the time they submit their sponsorship application. The sponsored spouse must cohabit in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day on which they receive their permanent resident status in Canada. If they do not remain in the relationship, the sponsored spouse’s status could be revoked. The conditional measure only applies to permanent residents whose applications are received on or after October 25, 2012—the day that the amendments came into force."

I think the 2yr condition doesn't apply to you since you landed in 2010. This is only for applications received on or after October 25, 2012. Hence, the confusion + question about the status past the conditional period.

You wrote the definition of the conditional PR, so maybe read it again carefully. They won't take away your PR card after 2 years, they can revoke it during those 2 years if they find out you are not living together with your sponsor.

The conditional PR refers to the fact that the immigrant and the sponsor must be residing together for 2 years (physically living together under the same roof). If the immigrant leaves the sponsor or the other way around, the PR can be revoked. This condition applies to couples who have been married for 2 years or less or have no children in common.

Also, you cannot apply for citizenship after 3 years of being a PR. Under the current law (which will change soon) you must be residing in Canada for 1097 days out of the last 4 years. And the period before becoming a PR doesn't count in full, one day counts as half a day. The citizenship law will change soon though, being eligible to apply only after 4 years of residence out of the last 6 years.

You can apply for your SIN card right after landing, you don't need to wait for the PR card. Also, like scylla said, your PR card will be valid for 5 years and yo will need to renew it 6 months before it expires. Keep in mind also, that for renewal of the PR, you will need to satisfy residency requirements. You must live in Canada at least 2 years out of the 5 years period.

Thanks! This is useful! I wasn't sure what the conditional thing implied but it makes more sense now.
According to my calculations (since I am not planning to be anywhere but Canada apart from a few vacays here and there), I'll be eligible for citizenship before I'll have to renew the PR.
Makes everything a little less complicated.

Bucharest – Romania: 14 months

Check this link: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm/fc-spouses.asp#europe periodically for updated info.

This is only if you apply outland while your spouse is still with you in Canada.

If you file the application inside Canada, your spouse would have to be living with you in Canada. Current processing time is anywhere between 10 - 14 months though on the website, it says 16 months: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-fc.asp (scroll down)

Good luck!
