Hi everyone,

I am writing to see if anyone has been in a situation similar to mine and what the possible outcomes were. I am an Italian citizen and a permanent resident of the UK, living and working as self-employed in Scotland. I have been here for 6 years, did my whole undergraduate degree here and have not moved since. I only go back to Italy occasionally to visit my family. I am currently applying for a master's in Canada in the same subject as my undergrad, that is also tied to my current job.

I read that to obtain a study permit we must show strong ties to our home country to prove that we would be going back. I find myself in a bit of tough spot because the only ties I have in Italy are my family -- I don't have a bank account there, don't own assets, nor have a job or pay taxes there. I have lived my adult life in the UK, have been paying taxes here, and my PR will allow me to come back to Scotland without any issue. I don't own a house though, I am simply renting.

My question is: has anyone else proved ties to their PR country instead of their home country, and were you granted the permit?

I know it may seem premature without knowing whether I'll be accepted, but having to move back to Italy to prove my ties there would imply a crazy amount of paperwork and time and would force me to make the move relatively soon, so I am considering my options to make the process easier.

If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sara

Others can comment as well as this is only my view but assuming you have a right to reside in UK post Brexit so as you say a PR of UK with a UK degree then personally do not see this will be a big issue coming from Europe given in effect you could return back to any EU country not just Italy as well as UK with your status.

Where you might read about ties to home country in my view tends to be applicants from outside of Europe who are not from visa exempt countries where even for a TRV the applicants would need to show ties to home country.

Without reading through the requirements you may still find though a requirement for both a police certificate from both UK and from Italy so keep that in mind as well to check out as the usual backup documentation from your degree, things that take time to get.

As said this is my view only so expect others will comments as well

Thank you, I appreciate your answer. Yes, I do have "Settled Status" (Indefinite Leave to Remain) so my plan is to come back to the UK and apply for specific positions that require the MA that I intend to pursue.

I could also show that I have family ties in Italy, though that's basically all I have in my home country.
