My parents are planning to come to Canada for a visit. They have a 10 year multiple entry visa for USA and have visited USA twice and Canada once. Last time when they were in USA i became a PR for canada so they applied and got a Canadian Visa from New York. They were here for 4 months and went back.

They are planning to come to Canada again and we are confused to decide which visa to apply. We would like to get a multiple entry visa if the duration is 4 - 5 years....does anybody have an idea of what is default duration of multiple entry? I have read some posts in which people have got multiple entry visa for 15 months only.If the duration is less than 2 years then we would like to probably not apply for multiple entry visa...Any inputs on that will be truly apreciated?

The visa officer decides the duration of the multiple entry visa ranging from a year to five years.

The validity of most visa varies from CHC offices to the other. In Africa for instance, they issue 2 months multiple visas! In India, they can issue, in most cases, to a maximum of 5yrs. But I have known of cases they issued 3 months multiple visa too. It all depends on the VO handling the case

For first time visitor visa applicants, the visa officers sometimes do not give multiple entry visas especially if the applicant/s has/have not had foreign travels.

My parents have travelled once to canada and twice to USA in last 4 years. They have a 10 year multiple entry visa for USA and already have one single entry visa for Canada. What is the likelihood of getting 5 year multiple entry visa...

You can not actually ask for the number of years/months but you can ask for the multiple entry and pay the corresponding fee. Your parents can get lucky. I have heard of some people being granted 5 years multiple but first hand info, three years- travelled twice to Canada, each time single entry then asked for multiple, was granted three years.
