Should I wait?

Hi All

I have recently received my visa to land in Canada, My immigration process started off in single category. I now want to get married to my bf. Can anyone tell me what happens if I get married and notify the cic of the change in my marital status.

My main question is DO I than apply for canadian immigration from scratch or is it possible that I be allowed to travel (after whatever procedure the authorities have).

Have you landed already? Are you engaged?

If you have already landed, you don't have to, you can just sponsor him. (From my understanding) if you're engaged, you may have to let them know, but not totally sure on that. Maybe give a little more details and someone could give you the 100% correct information haha.

You have two choices.

You can either land first and then get married.

Or you can get married first, return your visa to CIC, notify them that you have gotten married, and submit all of the forms and supporting documentation for your new spouse. Once CIC has finished reviewing your spouse's information, they will issue new visas for both of you.

Above all, do not get married before you land and then land on your current (single) visa. If you do this you will never be able to sponsor your spouse. You will also be committing representation by stating you're single when you're in fact married. Misrepresentation can result in having your PR status revoked.

As I have not landed yet, would getting married mean that I start the immigration application process all over again or just the part of updating my info. What I am more concerned is that will it be a part of my same application for PR as I have read on some sites that the immigration process starts all over again.

It doesn't start over from zero for you, but it will for your spouse. He will need to be assessed and you will need to submit all documents for him, including police certificates and medical background.

Your choices are
- land now while you are still single and wait to get married until after you land. After you land and are a PR, sponsor your spouse as a member of the family class (while you are living in Canada)
- get married before you land. To do this, you will have to return your COPR and visa to the Embassy so they will cancel them. Also give them all the documents for your spouse so they can review all the documents for your spouse and assess his eligibility. If for some reason he isn't eligible, you won't be either.

Note that this assumes that you and your husband haven't lived together for one year yet. If you have, you are already considered common-law partners and will need to sponsor him on your current application (or else you never will be able to)
