while it's not required, if this is referring to the applicant, and it's something they plan to do anyway, then it's best to change the name BEFORE sending in the application, or at least before getting approved (you can send updated information to CIC while processing). i did not change my name in time, and now it will require much more time to get everything changed over, plus i will have to pay for a new pr card, since i already got my free one in my maiden name. also, this will restrict my traveling, since i'll have to change my passport first, and my passport and pr card won't match until i get a new card. once the applicant lands as pr, everything will be done based on the name on the COPR/PR card.

No. Too much of an effort which yields no possible advantage at all.

Listen to this person. If the applicant (the one being sponsored) wants to change their name, then it is best to do this first and update the passport. The name on the passport attached to the application is what will determine your Canadian identification, which would be a bigger hassle to update later. If it is the sponsor who wants to change their name, the timing is less important. If neither want to, they are not required to.

i agree. also wont it create conflict of u decide to change ur name to pertain to ur husband's name when all ur other docs that have ur old family name etc, degrees, birth C etc.
i dunno its just such a hassle. i havent changed my name too cause there's no point to it. pfffht, people in my culture get very touched by the fact that the wife uses the husband's name with hers like wth *eyerolls* :p it has no meaning to me personally ::)

adding on, i actually had my husband fix his passport which had different spellings of this own name as to what his degrees & other docs had cause i dint want LVO to be like well, diff spellings cud altogether be classified as to be a completely diff person & u know others issues that can be so petty to deal with so i had em update his passport to match the rest & then we filed the app based on the new passport's info. :)

question!
i mean updating name as my name's Johnny Bravo & i'd like to make it Johnny Depp; cause i guess ud have to backup ur name change with why ur changing it & (if its to add spouse's name) then maybe ur spouse's ID etc
but u can just change it to anything right? (when making ur new passport that ul be using for ur visa)...saying that u'll be wanting to use this new name when u come to canada etc
any clarification?

Backup for the name change will need to be given to the passport office. In the case of marriage, a marriage certificate is usually all that's needed. For other reasons, you would need to go through another application first to receive some other kind of certificate (like a birth certificate) and give that to the passport office.

But all that would be done in the original country... as for Canada, CIC shouldn't need any backup or special requests as long as your desired name is already on the passport you give them.

???! i had not thought of this initially. I have already send in my application and was hoping to take up my husband's name. This therefore means that it will take a while for me to change my dad's name to his name? :(

You can update your passport while your application is in process and let them know, but I'm not sure if this would be better or worse than waiting and changing your name in Canada. How much it delays your application depends on your visa office.

Updating the name mid-process doesn't really cause a delay. It's a fairly common occurrence.

Thank you nmclean. i will weigh the options and decide on what is best for us. It this may delay the process at my visa office, then i would rather wait..... ;D

This may be looked at as an advantage, right? I think it shows commitment and may carry some weight in am event of suspicion of marriage fraud. Just thinking......

No. People who keep their own names aren't any less committed...

Most of my friends don't change their last name after marriage.
It may be a cultural preference.
