I have a temporary work permit however I was laid off numerous months ago and I'm in Canada tied to this work permit. I went to the USA a few days back and when I re-entered Canada I was asked whether I still worked at this company tied to my work permit. I said no and I was told to go inside to immigration since the officer said I have no status. Inside I was asked a few questions and I informed another officer that another employer has already sent in an LMO application a few months back and I'm waiting to hear the result. After a few minutes I was handed back my passport and nothing else was said.

Should I be concerned? Will I be receiving anything by the mail at all? Is this a problem? Very worried, would like to know if I'm over-reacting.

They could have refused you re-entry but chose to believe you and allowed entry to canada. They will check that an employer has an LMO application in progress, and if it is you are OK . If not you may get a visit from immigration.

If your status in Canada is not certain it is never advisable to leave until you are sure you can get back in.

If you are waiting for a LMO, nothing to worry about. Make sure you apply for a new work permit(even if you don't have the LMO yet) 2 weeks before the current permit expires. This will ensure you can continue to stay in Canada legally until a decision is made and if you happen to get on CIC's radar again, you will have proof that you've applied.

Lastly, do not leave Canada for any reason unless you have a new work permit and are employed.

Yes but the issue is that I already left Canada and then returned where questions were asked. I'm just not sure what next steps immigration could take or if I'm just overreacting.

If they were going to do anything, they would have told you(they have to). Just concentrate on getting your work permit and employment to be on the safe side.

Yes thank you. I will hope for the best. I should be hearing back from the lmo shortly so I hope it goes well. Now I know it's best not to leave the country in such a situation. I had no idea this could cause problems.

If anyone else agrees or disagrees with the above please let me know.

Yeah... for CIC if someone holds a work permit but isn't working, there is no basis for them to remain in Canada. Reason why leaving the country without current employment is very risky.

In fact, CIC is working to close this loophole for international students. They want to make it such that when a student fails to enroll for school(barring special situations), they will be notified and can get them to leave.

You are very fortunate. One guy from India(I think the username is jsa) applied for a temporary resident visa but did not submit a current employment letter(he wasn't working). The application was rejected but they sent his passport to the border people closest to where he lives. Haven't heard from him since then, so no idea what happened after.
