Hi Everyone,

I'm a permanent resident in Canada (my husband is a Canadian citizen), however I am a citizen of the United States. If I applied for Canadian citizenship and received dual citizenship of both countries would my future children also hold dual citizenship if they are born in Canada?

I'm not sure if my question makes much sense, but I would do not want to hurt the chances of my children holding dual citizenship if I apply for Canadian citizenship.

Thanks for your help!

1. Immaterial, if you husband received Canadian citizen (other than through descent) then the children will be Canadian citizens. All you have to do is apply for proof of citizenship. If they are born in Canada, they are automatically citizens (unless you are a diplomat) Then you apply for US citizenship via descent for them. Whether you become a Canadian citizen is immaterial.

Thanks for the information. My husband is a natural born Canadian citizen, whereas; I am natural born United States citizen. As long as my applying for Canadian citizenship is immaterial to the status of my children I'll be looking into applying soon.

Thanks again!

The requirement for you to pass on US citizenship to your child if it is born outside the US and the other parent is not a US citizen is that you have lived in the US for at least 5 years in the past and 2 of those years must be after you turned 14. It does not seem to matter how many other citizenships you have. The child would get Canadian citizenship automatically for being born in Canada.

If the child is born in the US, it would get US citizenship automatically and Canadian citizenship through the father. In that case, the only requirement for Canadian citizenship is that the father was either born in Canada or naturalized.
