Dear All

I recently have landed for 2 months in Toronto Ontario. I know the rules and obligations of OHIP. I wish to know:

If I apply for OHIP, it will come in 3 months in mail, I will be out of country but will have the card couriered. When I return later after one year I would not have fulfilled my residency in ontario so i know a new 3 month waiting period will kick in . . . .

It makes sense to apply for OHIP later once i plan to establish permanent residency in ontario, however if i start the card application process now and get the card, wont i save time later ?

I understand that the 3 month waiting period will kick in again next time, but does that mean that I would have to get my card renewed , that they would dispose of the old card, and I would have to reapply ?

I dont mind the 3 month wait period, but would applying for card save me time for card application in future or not ?

Just need simple yes or no for this -- seniors please help with advise

Thanks

How would it save time later? If you realize that you have to do the 3 months waiting period over again, you will have 3 months after your 2nd arrival to apply for the card. Besides, knowing that you are planning on leaving again in 2 months and knowing that you will not meet the eligibility requirements for the card when you apply for it can be seen as fraud too. When you apply for the card, you should be clear with OHIP that you are leaving again in 2 months and then they will tell you not to apply now but later.

With your situation, you can't legally apply for a Health Card. You can only apply for one if you are about to get eligible, among other things that means don't leave the province much in the upcoming 3 months.

Also, you don't save any time if you apply for a Health Card now. Once you actually settle in Ontario, you can apply for your Health Card and you will receive it in the mail several days before the end of your waiting period, hence you won't lose any time at all.
