Shall I travel out of Canada after applying for PR? I'm the one being sponsored

Hello,

I've applied to be a permanent resident of Quebec on sponsorship program last Sept 2009 from inside Canada. My common law partner is sponsoring me. However, apart from the letter I received in Feb 2010 asking for more recent information, I didn't get any other news yet as to whether my case is approved.

Now, I got a great opportunity to work abroad this summer 2010, and I'd like to go out of Canada for 2 months. However, the call centre staff told me about that I might risk not being able to return to Canada again if my entry is refused at the customs, then of course, I'll lose everything. But at the same time, I think that there's no reason why they wouldn't let me in. I'm from Hongkong and I don't need a visa to enter Canada normally, the last 2 times I entered Canada were quick and simple. Since I'm a freelance Translator, I earn my life without working illegally either, so...why wouldn they refuse my entry?

So, I know I "can" travel out of Canada, but I'll take risk...personally, I estimate the risk isn't that big but since this is a unique case, I'd like to listen to your opinions and advices before taking a decision.

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm so hesitant now!

Thank you!

Hello there!
I would personally not take the risk, because a wife of one of the guys in the lab did go out after applying, and she had big troubles coming back. She did come back though, but it is a pain in the ...
So it depends on the officer, if he/she is nice no problem, if they are normal =)) then it can be not so pleasant.
However, as you said you don;t need a visa to come in, so your chances are better !

Thanks for your reply Racoon.

Well I'm a bit worried to know that most people would choose not to take this risk...but I really wonder, "do the custom officers need to give a legitimate reason if they don't let me in?" It's horrible not to go back one's home if, unfortunately, the process takes 2-3 years like some cases I saw here?

BTW, may I know from where his wife is? And...one of the guys in the "lab"? What "lab" did you mean (if that matters)?

Thanks again!

Hey!
He is just a my lab mate =)), we work together, his wife is from Indonesia.
They will give you a legitimate reason for not allowing you in. The thing is, then you apply for a temporary stay (work/study permit) you "promise" the Canadian government to eventually leave, by applying for permanent residency you kind of break that promise, if you know what I mean. So, when you will be coming back (still as a temporary resident), they have the right not to allow you in as you intend to stay in Canada, which is proved by your PR application. Well I hope that makes a bit of sense =))

Really, they are ..... (insert the bad word of your choice), for doing that, because you are trying to obey the law, and it is really stupid that you can't travel (I am myself in the same situation right now, but I am Russian, so my risks are much higher than yours, so I am not even going to attempt it =))

Cheers, Raccoon

Oh, unfortunately, what you said makes lots of sense...omg, is that what you heard from some real cases Raccoon?

I just can't believe that how, sometimes, laws could be so inflexible...is there any means that I can come back without being a visitor then? Just because I made such PR application, I should have an implied status...?

Thanks again.

Welcome anyone else to share their experiences!
